How to get more LinkedIn connections
Getting more LinkedIn connections isnât about inviting anyone and everyone. Itâs about inviting the right people every week, with a profile that makes them want to accept. Hereâs what works.
1. Polish your profile before you invite
People who receive your invitation glance at your photo, your headline and little else before deciding. Check three things:
- A professional, up-to-date photo and banner.
- A clear headline: what you do and for whom (âI help fashion brands sell across Europeâ says far more than âConsultantâ).
- An About section and experience that are current, with your company properly linked.
2. Decide who you want to reach
Before you send a single invitation, define your audience: industry, job titles, specific companies and location. The clearer it is, the higher your acceptance rate and the more useful your network. We walk through it step by step in how to choose who to invite on LinkedIn.
3. Invite people who are active
A profile with very few connections is usually an account thatâs barely used: even if they accept, it adds no visibility. A simple rule is to prioritise profiles with 500+ connections, or with lots of followers or mutual connections. Also avoid inviting company pages, schools or brands that use a personal profile.
4. Respect LinkedInâs weekly limit
LinkedIn limits how many invitations you can send each week. It doesnât publish the exact number, and it varies by account. If you hit the limit, LinkedIn tells you and wonât let you send more for a while. The sensible approach:
- Send in small batches, with breaks in between.
- Stop as soon as LinkedIn shows a warning.
- Every now and then, withdraw old pending invitations that nobody accepts.
5. With a note or without?
A personal note can help with very specific people, but it takes time, and LinkedIn may limit how many notes you can send on a free account. To grow steadily in your industry, many people send invitations without a note and focus on having a profile that speaks for itself.
6. When they accept, start the conversation
A new connection is an opportunity, not a sale. Post regularly so people see you, comment on what your connections share, and only message when you have something useful to say.
7. Measure and adjust
Keep track of how many invitations you send and how many are accepted. If an audience rarely accepts, change the industry, job titles or location. The companies that accept most tell you where your audience is.
Summary
- A polished profile.
- A clear audience.
- Active people only.
- A steady pace, within the weekly limit.
- A conversation once they accept.
- Measure and adjust.
